Christopher Tolkien’s Foreword reproduces two pages from the manuscript of The Hobbit, together with six further illustrations and several extracts from letters written by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Issued in a price-clipped Unwin Hyman dustwrapper. This has the red sun on the upper cover and shows the Unwin Hyman 50th Anniversary Edition ISBN, but not the red stripe on the bottom right hand corner. No Unwin Hyman copies have been seen in this version of the dustwrapper.
