Two impressions issued:

First Impression 1988
This is a hybrid edition composed of sheets printed in the USA but bearing the Unwin Hyman imprint and publishing details. Bound in a Houghton Mifflin binding under an Unwin Hyman dustwrapper.

Although dated 1988, the Unwin Hyman edition was actually published in March 1989. 7,500 sets of sheets were imported from the United States. An additional 1,500 sets were imported for sale in Canada, but when bound these were issued in a dustwrapper using the design for the American edition, but with an Unwin Hyman imprint.

The Annotated Hobbit was first published in the United States in 1988 by Houghton Mifflin.

Second Impression 1989
Printed in the UK, with the Unwin Hyman imprint throughout – this is the first wholly British edition.
