Lot 534 Quotes from a notes made on a transcript of an interview with Daphne Cloke (née Castell), date not stated but c.1966, giving his views on the analysis of a work of fiction rather than the enjoyment of it: ”…comparable to a man who having enjoyed some food … used an emetic before digestion was complete and sent the regurgitation to be chemically analysed…”. See p.193.
Lot 535 Quotes from a letter to Graham Tawar, dated 4-5 June 1971, in which Tolkien discusses the names Gondor and Tolkien, and linguistic invention. Tolkien’s signature and a footnote are reproduced above the lot description. See p.194.
