This is the (later) Second State of the First Impression.

The First Impression of this Grafton Edition has been seen with two different cover illustrations – the earlier (First) state featuring Roger Garland’s Thú, as wolf more great, and the later (Second) state featuring John Howe’s Fingolfin's Challenge to Morgoth.

The cover illustration was changed partway through first impression - covers may have been stripped from Garland illustrated copies.
