Tolkien Studies: An Annual Scholarly Review

Notes
This volume of the Tolkien Studies series includes a number of Tolkien-related items:

1) The Name ‘Nodens’ by J.R.R. Tolkien - See pp.177-183 - Tolkien’s essay published as an appendix to the Report on the Excavation in Lydney Park. The word Nodens appears in three inscriptions found at the excavations in Lydney Park and appears to be the name of an otherwise unrecorded god. Tolkien links the name to the Old Irish Núadu and Welsh Nudd. Núadu was the King of the Túatha dé Danann, the one time rulers of Ireland. Tolkien goes on to trace the name in other ancient languages and finally comes to the conclusion that the name means either ‘the catcher’, ‘the snarer’ or ‘the hunter’.

2) The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth: Philology and the Literary Muse by Thomas Honegger - See pp.189-199 – This article traces the development of Tolkien’s contribution to Essays and Studies 1953 and includes extracts from unpublished drafts of The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth.

3) Ae Adar Nín by J.R.R. Tolkien - See upper cover - Handwritten notes by Tolkien on the back of a postcard give a partial translation of The Lords Prayer into Sindarin. This was first published in Vinyar Tengwar 44.

4) Walter E. Haigh, Author of A New Glossary of the Huddersfield Dialect by Janet Brennan Croft - See pp.184-188 - This article gives background information on Haigh and the book to which Tolkien contributed a six page Foreword.
