Eight impressions issued before the dustwrapper design was changed again:

7th Impression 1973
8th Impression 1974
9th Impression 1974*
9th Impression 1978*
10th Impression 1978
11th Impression 1980
12th Impression 1984
13th Impression 1985

Copies of the 7th Impression 1973 have also been seen with the previous style of dustwrapper.

* Two 9th Impressions - dated 1974 and 1978 - were issued. Only the 1978 Impression is recorded in later copies.

For most impressions the dustwrapper was laminated to give a gloss finish, however, some copies of the 8th and 9th Impressions (1974) lack the laminated finish. The 9th Impression 1978 saw the introduction of heavier weight paper for the text which increased the thickness of the book by about 5mm.

Some copies have the ISBN for The Two Towers on the dustwrapper. This error was corrected in the 1980s.
