The description for Lot 481 (p.66) includes a postscript from a letter to Agatha Carew Hunt dated 11 May 1965. The letter is a standard pre-printed response to an enquiry, but includes a handwritten postscript by Tolkien in which he apologises for the letter not being sent until 4/10/65, and goes on to explain that this was due to a change in secretary and a heavy workload imposed by the Ace Books pirated edition of The Lord of the Rings.

The letter is reproduced in a photograph.

The letter is not included in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (1981).
