Christopher Tolkien’s Foreword reproduces two pages from the manuscript of The Hobbit, together with six further illustrations and several extracts from letters written by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Two impressions were issued:

1st Impression 1987
2nd Impression 1987

The dustwrapper for the 1st Impression is shown opposite. Note that the red stripe on the bottom right hand corner does not make it to the edge of the upper cover. This was remedied no later than the 2nd Impression and a small number of 1st Impression copies have been seen in corrected dustwrappers. See the Guild Publishing Edition for an image.

A copy of the 2nd Impression has been seen in a standard dustwrapper (which has a white sun and no red stripe), but it has not been possible to determine if this was as issued.
