The map showing A Part of The Shire appears on page 18. The map of The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age and the Map of Gondor, Rohan and Mordor appear spread over the final pages. The maps were redrawn by Stephen Raw in 1994.

This book was issued no earlier than 1998. Although it is not actually stated that this is a Book Club Associates edition, it was only available from BCA outlets. It appears to be pages of the standard hardback edition bound as a paperback.

* ISBN 0261102311 (the ISBN of the HarperCollins hardback edition) appears on the verso of the title page but not on the wrappers.

2nd and 3rd Impression copies have been seen.

This BCA paperback edition can be distinguished from a HarperCollins paperback edition by the absence of a barcode on the lower cover.
