Glen GoodKnight’s article Death and the Desire for Deathlessness: The Counsel of Elrond contains a letter dated 17 November 1957 to Dr. Herbert Schiro, in which Tolkien discusses allegory in The Lord of the Rings and argues that is about death and deathlessness, not power and dominion.
