This catalogue includes several Tolkien-related lots:
Lot 382 – A six page letter to G.E. Selby undated but probably c.1955/6. The lot description includes extracts from the letter discussing allegory in The Lord of the Rings and its publication as a ‘trilogy’. Different extracts were published in Fine Books and Manuscripts (1984).
Lot 383 – A letter to Miss Jaworski dated 9 December 1965. Tolkien declines to agree to a dramatisation of The Lord of the Rings.
The letters above are not included in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (1981).
Lot 384 (p.181) – A two page letter dated 18 December 1949. Here Tolkien discusses the completion of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, deficiencies in the production of The Hobbit, anachronisms in Farmer Giles of Ham, dragons and languages. Different extracts were printed in Printed Books, Manuscripts and Music (1986). This letter is reprinted in more extensive form in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (1981). |
