This volume collects together the four issues of The Review of English Studies published in 1925.

It contains Tolkien’s essays Some Contributions to Middle-English Lexicography (from Vol.1, No. 2) and The Devil's Coach-Horses (from Vol.1, No. 3).

In Part I of Some Contributions to Middle-English Lexicography Tolkien discusses aspects of a variety of Middle English words and their Modern English meanings. Part II consists of a series of notes on the glossary to the Early English Text Society Edition of Hali Meidenhad.

The Devil's Coach-Horses discusses eaueres, a word found in the 1922 Early English Text Society Edition of Hali Meidenhad. Tolkien suggests that rather than meaning boar, the word should be translated as draught horse.

In some places this reprint edition is noted as being published in 1950. This appears to be an error – the current volume numbering system for The Review of English Studies was started in 1950, but the 1925 volume (from the old series) was not reprinted until 1969.
