Also includes a preface excerpted from Christopher Tolkien's foreword to the 50th Anniversary Edition of The Hobbit. The excerpt lacks the illustrations. Also includes Chapter One from The Lord of the Rings. The History of The Hobbit traces the history of The Hobbit, edited with commentary by John D. Rateliff. It includes a complete unpublished draft version of the story, together with many little-known illustrations and previously unpublished maps by Tolkien.
